Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit [Term?], from Sanskrit अक्षवाट (akṣavāṭa, “wrestling-ground”) (Turner, Ralph Lilley (1969–1985) A Comparative Dictionary of the Indo-Aryan Languages, London: Oxford University Press). Compare Punjabi ਅਖਾਡ਼ਾ (akhāṛā) (likely a Hindi borrowing), Gujarati અખાડો (akhāḍo), Bengali আখড়া (akhoṛa).
