From अन्- (an-, un-, not) + *अक्ष् (*ákṣ), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ókʷs (eye). See also अक्षि (akṣi).

    • c. 1700 BCE – 1200 BCE, Ṛgveda 2.15.7:
      प्रति श्रोणः स्थाद् व्य् अनग् अचष्ट सोमस्य ता मद इन्द्रश् चकार ॥
      prati śroṇaḥ sthād vy anag acaṣṭa somasya tā mada indraś cakāra.
      The cripple stood erect, the blind saw them. These things Indra did in the passion induced by Soma.
