Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀢𑀯𑀬 (tavaya), from a variant of Sanskrit तापक (tāpaka), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tāpakas, from Proto-Indo-European *tep-. Cognate with Persian تاوه (tâve).
