Inherited from Sanskrit तिलक (tilaka, tilak). In medieval Bengal, among many techniques, variolaters would make an incision upon the forehead, in which smallpox powder was rubbed. Such marks had a resemblance to a tilak. Doublet of তিলক (tilok).
