Borrowed from Classical Persian رومال (rūmāl), from رو (, face) +‎ مال (māl, rubber). Cognate with Assamese ৰুমাল (rumal), Gujarati રૂમાલ (rūmāl), Hindustani رومال (romāl) / रूमाल (rūmāl), Malayalam ഉറുമാൽ (uṟumāl), Marathi रुमाल (rumāl), Punjabi ਰੁਮਾਲ (rumāl).
