From Pali gaṇikā (prostitute, literally she who belongs to groups; she who is familiar with groups) or from Sanskrit गणिका (gaṇikā, idem). Cognate with Burmese ဂဏိကာ (ga.ni.ka); Khmer គណិកា (kɔɔnekaa).
