Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Sanskrit अमनुष्य (amanuṣya, demon, literally nonhuman), from (a, not) + मनुष्य (manuṣya, human), equivalent to Thai (à) +‎ มนุษย์ (má-nút). Cognate with Lao ອະມະນຸດ (ʼa ma nut).
