From Proto-Tai *qweːnᴬ (“to hang up”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨡ᩠ᩅᩯᩁ, Lao ແຂວນ (khǣun), Lü ᦶᦧᧃ (ẋwaen), Shan ၵႅၼ် (kěn) or ၽႅၼ် (phěn), Ahom 𑜁𑜢𑜐𑜫 (khiñ).
