ཁོལ (khol, servant) +‎ པོ (po). Compare Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(g/k)(j)wal (slave; servant) (STEDT). Cognate with Burmese ကျွန် (kywan, slave), Proto-Loloish *C-kywan¹ (slave), Chinese (OC *ɡʷraːns), (OC *koːn, *kroːns).
