From Old Georgian ეშვი (ešvi), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *ešw- (wild boar, pig). Cognate with Mingrelian ოსქუ (osku, pigsty).

Possibly Georgian იშელი (išeli, pigsty) also belongs to this word family.
