From Old Chinese (OC *naŋ, “young woman”). Cognate with Thai นาง (naang), ᦓᦱᧂ (naang), Tai Nüa ᥢᥣᥒᥰ (näang), Vietnamese nàng, Burmese နန်း (nan:).
