From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰmɔːnᴬ¹ (cushion; pillow). Cognate with Thai หมอน (mɔ̌ɔn), Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨾᩬᩁ, Khün ᩉ᩠ᨾᩬᩁ, Lao ໝອນ (mǭn), Tai Dam ꪢꪮꪙ, Shan မွၼ် (mǎun), Phake မွꩫ် (mon), Ahom 𑜉𑜨𑜃𑜫 (mon), Nong Zhuang moan.
