Compare Arabic ظَلِمَ (ẓalima, to be(come) dark) and Biblical Hebrew צַלְמָוֶת (ṣalmɔ́wɛṯ, deep shadow).

Cognate with Biblical Hebrew צֶלֶם (ṣɛ́lɛm) and, by dissimilation of /l/ to /n/, Arabic صَنَم (ṣanam).
