From Middle Chinese compound 市內／市内 (d͡ʑɨ^X nuʌi^H, literally “city, town + inside, interior”). Compare modern Mandarin 市內／市内 (shìnèi) reading shìnèi, Cantonese si⁵ noi⁶.
