Glyph origin

[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *bi) : semantic + phonetic 𣬉 ().

Etymology

[edit]

Probably Sino-Tibetan; compare Tibetan དབྱི (dbyi, lynx) (Schuessler, 2007).

Schuessler also sees possible cognacy with byi in Tibetan པི་ཤི (pi shi) and བྱི་ལ (byi la), though byi might be derived from Indic (cf. Hindi बिल्ला (billā) < Sanskrit बिडाल (biḍāla); see there for ultimate non-Indic etymology); even so, byi is still possibly native if པི་ཤི (pi shi)'s shi was from earlier *zhi and cognate with (OC *rɯ) (ibid.).
