Learned borrowing from Sanskrit नागरी (nāgarī), from नगर (nagara, urban, of the city). Compare its use in देवनागरी (devanāgarī).

Cognate with Bengali নগরী (nogri), Assamese নগৰী (nogori), Hindi नागरी (nāgrī).
