북극(北極) (Bukgeuk, North Pole) +‎ (gom, bear). Compare Chinese 北極熊北极熊 (běijíxióng), Japanese 北極熊 (hokkyokuguma), Vietnamese gấu Bắc Cực, all of which literally mean “Arctic bear”.
