- generation in a descent group (how distantly one is descended from a common ancestor, i.e. a great-grandson of somebody has a "higher" 항렬 (hangnyeol) than a great-great-grandson regardless of their actual age; generally, people of the same 항렬 (hangnyeol) share a character in their name, no matter how distantly related)
