๐ ๐น๐๐ฐ๐ฝ
Gothic[edit]
Pronunciation[edit]
Etymology 1[edit]
From Proto-Germanic *wesanฤ (โto be, remainโ), from Proto-Indo-European *hโwes-. Compare Latin Vesta (โgoddess of the hearthโ), Sanskrit เคตเคธเคคเคฟ (vรกsati, โdwellโ). Some forms are suppletive and instead derive from Proto-Indo-European *hโรฉsti.
Verb[edit]
๐ ๐น๐๐ฐ๐ฝ โข (wisan)
- to be
Usage notes[edit]
- To express the imperative mood, morphologically subjunctive forms of this verb are used instead of morphologically imperative forms (thus sijaiรพ is used with imperative meaning instead of wisiรพ, for example; occurrences of wisiรพ belong to the verb meaning "remain, abide" below instead).
Conjugation[edit]
Multiple variant forms are attested:

Etymology 2[edit]
From Proto-Germanic *wesanฤ (โto consume, feastโ), from Proto-Indo-European *wes- (โto grazeโ). The usage of the adverb ๐ ๐ฐ๐น๐ป๐ฐ (waila) to qualify this verb is very common (three out of the four total attestations of wisan); the resulting phrase waila wisan (in various conjugated forms) seemingly represents a calque of Ancient Greek ฮตแฝฯฯฮฑฮฏฮฝฮตฯฮธฮฑฮน (euphraรญnesthai), which it translates. However, the same Greek verb may also be translated simply as wisan without the adverb waila (Luke 15:24).
