Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit -𑀇𑀮𑁆𑀮 (-illa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Ashokan Prakrit *-𑀇𑀮𑁆𑀮 (*-illa), which belongs to a class of adjectival suffixes that have been tied to Proto-Indo-European *-lós. Compare Nepali -इलो (-ilo), -ईलो (-īlo).
