From Ancient Greek ἀ- (a-, not) +‎ Ancient Greek κινέω (kinéō, I move) +‎ Ancient Greek ὄνυξ (ónux, claw), referring to their immobile claws unlike every other felid. Coined by British scientist Joshua Brookes in 1828.
