Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Possibly from ahven (perch) + maa (land), the first term can possibly be derived from Proto-Norse ᚨᚺᚹᚨᛚᚨᚾᛞ (ahwaland, water-land). See Finnish Ahvenanmaa for further etymology.
