Etymology

[edit]

First attested as brimnum in 794. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps a dative plural derivation from Old Dutch brim (edge, bank), from Proto-Germanic *brimą. A composite derivation from brim and heem (home, settlement) is impossible. Compare Borssele.
