- In early December 1973, I suggested to Minister Subramaniam and Nayudamma that with the subject of environment, benchmarked at the Stockholm conference and the World Environment Day becoming an important new area of concern worldwide, it would be both appropriate and necessary to rename our principal research laboratory relevant to this area—the Central Public Health Engineering Research Institute (CPHERI) of CSIR—as the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI). They both agreed with alacrity and asked me to request the PM to do the renaming at a function at the CPHERI premises in Nagpur.
