From Middle Limburgish dadel, from Italian dattilo, from Latin dactylus, from Ancient Greek δάκτυλος (dáktulos, literally finger), a folk-etymological alteration of a word from a Semitic source such as Arabic دَقَل (daqal, variety of date palm) or Hebrew דֶּקֶל (deqel, date palm).
