Etymology[edit]

First attested as in villa ghestre and apud ghesteren in 1298-1304. Potentially derived from a compound of geest (elevated sandy land) and Old Dutch *wari (inhabitants) or heri (sandy ridge). Compare Geesteren and Geijsteren.
