Etymology

First attested as Hoog Duirswolde in 1718. Calque of West Frisian Hegeduerswâld, derived in turn from a compound of heech (high, elevated), Old Frisian Djoerd (a personal name) and wald (swamp forest, marsh forest). The element heech was added to distinguish the settlement from Laagduurswoude.
