Etymology[edit]

First attested as casterloe in 1409. Possibly a compound of Latin castra (encampment) + lo (clearing of trees), though this is deemed unlikely by the lack of archeological evidence of a Roman presence. Another possibility could be Middle Dutch *caster (chestnut tree) + lo.

Pronunciation[edit]

Proper noun[edit]

Kâssele n (Veldeke spelling)

  1. Castenray (a village in Venray, Limburg, Netherlands)
