Etymology

[edit]

First attested as cheldunc just before 1233. Compound of an unclear first element and donk (sandy hill protruding above a marsh). The first element is potentially related to dialectal kel (small artificial watercourse used to provide water to a watermill). So named to distinguish the settlement from Boerdonk and Donk in Beek en Donk.
