Etymology

Potentially attested as de bumele in 1144, attested with certainty as masebomel in 1294-1295. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a compound of Old Dutch bom (tree) and lo (light forest). The hydronym Maas was added later to distinguish the settlement from Zaltbommel.
