Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as meterick in 1483. Etymology uncertain. Unlikely to be derived from a Latin or Romance source, as no remains of Roman settlement have been found near the village. Possibly a contracted compound of an unknown first element and wijk (village, settlement). Compare Middelijk, Oostenrijk and Schadijk.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈmeː.təˌrɪk/
  • Hyphenation: Me‧te‧rik
