Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German milze n, from Old High German milzi n, from Proto-Germanic *miltiją n. The feminine gender in modern German is from Middle Low German milte f, reinforced by the analogy with other inner organs. Cognate to Dutch milt, English milt.
