From Proto-West Germanic *tālī (adjective), from Proto-Germanic *tēlijaz, from *tēlō (“deception, ruse, persecution”), from Proto-Indo-European *del- (“to aim, calculate, number, adjust, account”), equivalent to tāl + -e.
