Etymology

Compare Lithuanian grekšėti (to creak), Old High German krahhon (to crash), further Lithuanian girgždėti and Sanskrit गर्जति (gárjati, to thunder).

Some scholars, (Mladenov), argue for an onomatopoeic origin.
