Etymology

Cognate to Proto-Mongolic *kulkï (ear wax, middle ear), however the exact relationship remains unclear; compare Mongolian хулхи (xulxi, ear-wax, inner ear). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?) Proto-Tungusic *xūl- (to sound) and Proto-Uralic *kule- (to hear) are also compared.
