Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from French remis.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /reˈmiː/, [ʁeˈmiː], [ʁə-] (basic form)
  • IPA(key): /reˈmiːs/ (plural and genitive singular)
  • Audio:(file)
  • Rhymes: -iː

Noun

[edit]

Remis n (strong or mixed, genitive Remis, plural Remis or Remisen)

  1. (chess, sports) draw

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The normal plural is Remis, pronounced differently from the singular (as above). The plural Remisen is restricted to chess; it is also the plural of Remise.
  • Outside of chess contexts, Remis is not in common use among the general population. It is, however, fairly frequent in media jargon, especially to avoid repetition of Unentschieden.
