Possible obsolete sense in gambling[edit]

John Camden Hotten's Slang Dictionary (1873) has something about this term, relating to gambling by coin toss, but it doesn't seem easy to cite outside of old dictionaries. "Newmarket, in tossing halfpence, when the game is 'two out of three,' that is, when he who gains the first two tosses wins. When the first toss is decisive, the game is termed 'sudden death."
