  1. Context shows that the woman refers to the difference in government and culture between East and West Berlin. This shows that the term has meaning beyond 'environmentalism':
    • 1991, Human studies: Volume 14, supposedly published by the Society for Phenomenology and the Human Sciences:
      My hands and the hands of the young German woman are cramped from the cold. The hands of the East Berlin women are rough, red. The East Berlin woman who sits opposite me says in English, 'We live alternatively.'
