Etymology

[edit]

Hello, I'm on one of those LOOONG trip down the etymology lane. I went from shit (things you'd part with) to schism (apart ideology) to -scio (to tell apart). And I'm thinking, why not dis- -scio here? In the exact same sens as decision? Which at that point is a pleonasm (taking the parts apart?). Which SEGue nicely to my next part (get it?), isn't what a -sign is anyway? A thingy that SEGment concepts from one another to convey meaning?

Here is my take: This word is Desion, an non-pleonastic version of decision. But we like the -cis- root, because it reinforce the meaning by repetition. This is why the word Dessein, is slowly being replaced by intention. Which of course, just mean breaking apart too.

Okay, this is a STRETCH! Am I loosing it? I Hope someone can still follow. Of course, wiKTionnary is not deSigned to asSign any new meaning to any words. So I'll leave this here, an go mind my own shit. Iluvalar (talk) 21:03, 8 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
