It's not clear that the sense "room reserved for special occasions" is in fact a different sense from "living room" - it seems more likely to be a historical/cultural detail. Yes, it's not restricted to the UK; it's also found in e.g. Chicagoese (in a famously accented pronunciation, fronchroom)! I have merged the senses. - -sche (discuss) 02:03, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
