Is "surgeon" not an acceptable definition for the English word, even archaically? We show other languages as getting it from us. And there is a joke in Calvin & Hobbes, from the late 1980s, which builds on the boy's believing that the surgeon meaning is primary and the telephone operator sense is derived.
