Chambers 1908 defines this adjective as "larval, cucullate". Is that the same as our botany sense? Equinox 04:37, 1 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Good catch, that seems to be a different sense (or even two...), since Century distinguishes the two, having "1. In bot., mask-like; having the lower lip pushed upward so as to close the hiatus between the two lips, as in the snapdragon: said of a gamopetalous irregular corolla. 2. In zool., masked or disguised in any way. (a) Larval; not imaginal. (b) Having a coloration of the face or head suggestive of a mask; cucullate. 3. Same as personated." (They define personated as "Personified; impersonated; hence, feigned; pretended; assumed.") I was going to add it as Masked (especially by having face- or head-coloration reminiscent of a mask) or otherwise disguised (for example, by being larval rather than an imago), but...upon looking, I couldn't find any citations when I searched for personate+head or personate+coloration, and personate+insect only turned up hits for the botanical sense. :/ - -sche (discuss) 07:03, 1 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
