Moroccan word "afsantin"

[edit]

(translating woodworm)

Found in "Abdlelhaï Sijilmassi, Les plantes médicinales du Maroc, Le Fennec, Cazablanca, 2005, →ISBN" p. 29, as "أفْسَنْتِين", this word seems to have a berberic structure, and is clearly cognate of latin "absinthium". But it is not known by my-self or my informers, nor in Moroccan Arabic, nor in Tachelheyt. It could be :

  • a very old berberic name, maybe in relation (parent or descent) with latin "absinthium", and still present in Northern or Eastern Morocco;
  • a latin word which introduced in Moroccan Arabic with Old european migrations following reconquista;
  • a scientifically-built neologism.
