Borrowed from Latin Transsilvania, on the basis of the preposition trans (“across”) + silvam, the accusative singular of silva (“forest”). Meaning "across the forest". Itself a calque of Hungarian Erdély, from erdő (“forest”) + elü (“region beyond”).
