Borrowed from Spanish alfalfa, from Arabic الْفَصْفَصَة (al-faṣfaṣa), from Aramaic אַסְפַּסְתָּא (ʾaspastā) / ܐܰܣܦܷܣܬܳܐ (ʾaspestā, lucerne), from Akkadian 𒊍𒉺𒊍𒋾 (aspastu, presumably lucerne), from Old Median *aspāstiš (lucerne).
