Etymology

From Latin rapiō, with the Aromanian suffix -escu or possibly through a late Vulgar Latin form *rapēscō, as with many fourth conjugation verbs. Compare Romanian răpi, răpesc, Italian rapire, rapisco, French ravir, ravis.
