Uncertain. Possibly from the following:
- From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ataŋ (“carry on a shoulder pole between two people”).
- From Hokkien 厭重/厌重 (ià-tǎng), according to Manuel (1948). Possibly related to Tagalog katang or Hokkien 加重 (ka-tăng).
