From Vulgar Latin, Late Latin bovārius or boārius (cow herder), from Latin bovārius or boārius (of cattle), from bōs (ox). By surface analysis, bove +‎ -aro. Compare French bouvier, Portuguese boieiro, Romanian boar, Spanish boyero. Doublet of boario.
