From Proto-Aslian, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *wil ~ *wiil ~ *wiəl(ʔ) ~ *wəl ~ *wal ~ *wail (to turn). Cognates with Khmer វិល (vɨl), វល់ (vŭəl), វឹល (vɨl), Central Nicobarese cawál.
