From Middle French diguer, dicquier, dieguer, from Old French dikier, from Middle Dutch diken, dijcken, from Old Dutch *dīkon, from Proto-West Germanic *dīkōn (to dig, ditch, dam); cognate with Old English dīcian (to dam, dig). More at English dig.
